Director Kim Dae-gil (Co-Founder of Minischool, Head of Development/Operation)
Minischool, which develops an online distance education platform, is currently providing B2B services, starting with B2C education services. In order to expand globally, they have invested a lot of resources in distance education platforms since 2016. In particular, due to the protracted coronavirus, demand for remote online classes has exploded, and the monitoring service “WATAP” is being used to efficiently manage large volumes of traffic.
I chose the server monitoring agent as the biggest advantages: the ultimate convenience, easy to use UI/XU design, and resource equalizer, which takes less than 5 minutes from installation to use. Director Kim Dae-gil, the head of development/operation and co-founder of Minischool, talked directly about how Minischool uses Watap monitoring in order to use time and resources efficiently, and why smaller organizations must choose Watap.
Minischool is an edtech startup founded in 2016 by engineers from Kakao's Voice Talk development team. We are currently developing and operating distance education platforms and education services using them.
Our minischool platform is based on the concept of “character teaching,” where the teacher does not face the student, and the class is conducted as if the teacher were playing a game with the children's favorite characters. It is a method that can increase a child's level of immersion in class. Teachers conduct classes via Chrome on Windows/macOS, and students can participate in classes on various devices such as Android and iOS.
In addition, parents are equipped with a function that allows them to directly observe classes in real time, and class activity details are saved as videos or images and used in the service.
Our mini school currently provides B2B services, and many educational companies such as Walnut Labs, Genius Education, Hansol Education, and Ice Cream Kids are currently showing interest.
The Watap solution is used by development teams and DevOps teams to monitor infrastructure status and receive notifications. Currently, the Minischool platform is adopting a B2B strategy, and most personnel are responsible for platform development and operation.
Currently, all of Minischool's server infrastructure resources are composed of AWS, and various cloud-based services such as Clover Voice (Naver Cloud) and Alerts (NHN Cloud) are also being used for platform development/operation.
I am in charge of the development/operation of the Minischool education platform, and I am involved in the overall operation of the company as a co-founder. Before co-founding Minischool, Kakao developed Voice Talk.
With the application of infrastructure for processing large traffic, the need for infrastructure monitoring and notification systems naturally began to arise.
Since 2016, our minischool has invested a lot of resources in distance education platforms while challenging B2C, B2B, and global markets. In particular, due to the Corona crisis that began last year, demand for non-face-to-face education has exploded, and mini schools have begun to attract attention. As a result, the number of cooperative partners naturally increased, and concerns about managing large volumes of traffic, such as one-on-one classes, such as one-on-one, broadcast-type classes, began.
While I was diligently searching for monitoring tools, I came across Watap. Coincidentally, WhaTap Labs is also a Kakao Ventures family company, and I saw a promotional message saying that it was very easy to set up and install, so I introduced it.
Before starting the business, I used tools such as cacti and Zabbix. I've been using Datadog for infrastructure monitoring, RUM (Real User Monitoring), and log monitoring for the last 3 months or so.
I'm using server monitoring and URL monitoring.
I am convinced that the biggest advantage of WaTap is that it is the most convenient and quick to use for startups where the installation is very simple and time consuming. That's why we fell in love with Datadog's complex configuration and decided to use Watab again. In fact, it took less than 10 minutes to re-install the Watap agent on every server and set up a notification system.
Also, the resource equalizer is very useful in server monitoring. URL monitoring is also very effective in detecting when certain services are not working.
As I mentioned before, Datadog has so many features that it takes too long to set up. The UI is also unfamiliar. Taking time to learn the features is a disadvantage for startups like us that don't have enough time and resources.
On the other hand, the advantage of WATAP is its simplicity! Fast! This can be defined as one.
Starting a service, if even a small organization wants to continue providing quality services to users! If you need a systematic infrastructure monitoring/alerting system! The beginning is unconditionally WhaTap.
Even now, technology-based companies with DevOps teams must maintain and develop services, and the more they do, the more emphasis is placed on the importance of monitoring. If you want to maintain the quality of service provided to users and need a systematic monitoring system, you can't help but choose Watap:) I hope Minischool and WhaTap Labs will continue to develop together in the future!
